Mesaria Uncovered

You may come to Mesaria for a blue dome. I want to show you what lies behind the photograph.

A private experience through Mesaria’s working past, contemporary art, Hatzidakis wine and a local table.

WHY MESARIA

The blue dome is only the beginning.

Santorini is very good at showing you the beautiful part: white houses, blue domes, the caldera, the sunset. Mesaria tells a more practical story.

This is an inland village shaped by work, wine, trade and everyday life. I like starting with the photograph people recognise, then walking behind it and asking a different question: what was happening on this island between the photographs?

That shift is the reason I designed this experience around Mesaria.

From postcard to working island

THE FLOW

BLUE DOME → MESARIA → MATI → HATZIDAKIS → LOCAL TABLE

We begin with a beautiful blue-dome setting and time for photographs. Then the emphasis changes. Instead of collecting viewpoints, we start reading the village.

1. Start with the image

You get the Santorini photograph. I am not pretending the iconic side of the island is not beautiful. We simply do not stop there.

2. Read Mesaria differently

As we walk, I introduce the traces of an island that had to work for a living: wine production, agriculture, trade, workshops and the buildings that remain.

MATI · WINE + ART

Where art and wine become the same conversation.

At MATI Gallery, the experience moves from Santorini’s working past into its creative present. The guided Wine + Art experience combines a Yorgos Kypris retrospective with a tasting of six Hatzidakis wine labels.

I like this stop because it does not feel like two unrelated activities. Art, place, memory, landscape and wine start talking to one another.

The MATI Wine + Art experience lasts approximately one hour and currently operates seasonally. I plan the walk around its opening schedule rather than promising it on days when the gallery is closed.

HATZIDAKIS

Wine belongs in the story.

The Hatzidakis tasting is not a token wine stop added because Santorini tours are expected to include wine. It belongs here because wine is part of Mesaria’s working history and of the island’s identity.

We taste the six Hatzidakis labels included in the MATI Wine + Art experience and talk about Santorini wine in a way that makes sense in the landscape around us. You do not need to know anything about wine beforehand.

THE LOCAL TABLE

Then we stop walking.

After the art and wine, I like ending around a local table. Depending on the day, availability and the rhythm of the group, that may be Postalia tou Aegeou or Pentozali.

This is not a fixed tasting menu. We sit down, order food, talk and let the day slow down.

Food and any additional drinks are paid directly at the restaurant and are not included in the tour price.

I prefer this to a pre-packaged lunch because the ending can respond to the actual day rather than forcing every group into exactly the same table.

What makes this different

You will see a blue dome. But the blue dome is not the story.

You will walk through a village shaped by work, then move into contemporary art, wine and a local meal. The experience changes register without losing its connection to Santorini.

Who I made it for

For travelers who have seen the postcard and want to understand more of the island. Couples, friends, curious first-time visitors and people who would rather have a good conversation than collect another list of viewpoints.

If your goal is to see every famous Santorini landmark in one day, I would choose a different experience.

The rhythm

This is usually around 4 hours, depending on the MATI schedule, the route and how long we stay at the local table.

Expect village walking, uneven surfaces, steps and time standing during the gallery experience. I build in pauses rather than rushing between stops.

Because MATI’s Wine + Art experience currently operates May 1 to October 15, Tuesday to Sunday, this particular version is seasonal. Exact timing is planned around the gallery schedule.

Good to know

Format: private experience.

Focus: blue-dome photography, Mesaria’s working heritage, contemporary art, Hatzidakis wine and local food.

Walking: easy to moderate, with uneven village surfaces and some steps.

MATI: Wine + Art is seasonal and subject to gallery opening days and availability.

Food: restaurant food is paid directly at the venue and is not included in the tour price.

Dietary needs: tell me in advance so I can plan the ending properly.

Want to see this side of Santorini?

Tell me your dates, where you are staying and what you have already seen. I will work out the timing around MATI and the rest of the day.

Ask Maria about Mesaria

Mesaria Uncovered FAQ

Is this the same as a standard Mesaria and Vothonas village tour?

No. This experience is designed around Mesaria’s working history, contemporary art, MATI’s Wine + Art experience, Hatzidakis wines and a local food ending. The route is not built as a checklist of Mesaria and Vothonas sights.

Do I need to be interested in art?

No. The MATI visit is part of the larger story of how Santorini is made and interpreted today. You can enjoy the art without needing an art background.

Is the food included?

No. Food and additional drinks at the restaurant are paid directly at the venue. I choose the local ending according to the day and availability.

How much wine do we taste?

The MATI Wine + Art experience includes six Hatzidakis wine labels. The gallery’s current Wine + Art format lasts approximately one hour.

Can we do this if MATI is closed?

The full experience is built around MATI, so I plan it for the gallery’s operating days. If you have another date in mind, ask me and I can suggest a different Mesaria route.

Is the blue-dome stop the main attraction?

No. It is the visual beginning. The point is what happens after the photograph, when we start looking at Mesaria’s working history, art, wine and everyday life.

Is this suitable for first-time visitors?

Yes, especially if you want something beyond the standard Santorini highlights. It works particularly well when you already have caldera sightseeing elsewhere in your stay.

You came for the photograph. Stay for the story.
